Here are the neighborhoods of Passeonkquis Cove in 2026.

There are many names for the neighborhoods in Rhode Island amongst residents, particularly in Warwick - a city of villages.

Passeonkquis Cove is surrounded by several; most neighbors would know them as Gaspee Point, Governor Francis Farms, and the Gaspee Plateau. Warwick Downs (now Salter’s Grove and the Narragansett Village Condos) was a popular summer destination in the early 20th century. If we go back in time just a bit further, the area was a country club frequented by Rhode Island’s most famous family names.

This is an original handbook from the Country Club in 1889 in extraordinary condition.

The club was called “The Country Club” and was located, per their charter, in “Choppequonsett, Rhode Island.” The names of officers (and just about every member) are very well known. William Goddard, of the Goddard family - Colonel Robert Hale Ives Goddard is for whom Goddard Park is named. Samuel S. Durfee, of the Durfee family (for whom many streets and Durfee Hill Management Area are named). Well known Providence streets and place names like Peck, Dyer, Binney, and many more.

The history of the country club isn’t just preserved in books and charters, but in the roads and orientation of Gaspee Plateau neighborhood itself. Apparently the course was laid out by W.F. Davis just a few years after the charter above was published: “The whole course is laid on a point which makes into Narragansett Bay, with the Providence River on one side and Muddy Cove on the other…. The links stretch along shore over bluff and ravine and across brook and morass” (The Golfer, vol 2 no 4 [February 1896], p. 106). Thanks to the USGS aerial photos of 1938 and a detailed survey of the Brown property in the 1800s, we can overlay the two and find exactly the location of what became the Country Club house, where these very people met and golfed.
